ELEGY IN AUGUST
Death, the missing
tick in his clock,
arrived in time
for the funeral.
The sisters are
asleep who led him
into temptation
in his dreams.
(If I wake them,
the world will
disappear.) What
slithered away was
August, twisted into
the awful shape of things.
